| BackgroundInformation | Myelinbasicprotein(MBP)isthemajorextrinsicmembraneproteinofcentralnervoussystem.MBPisbelievedtobeimportantintheprocessofmyelinationofnervesinthecentralnervoussystem(CNS).MBPwasinitiallysequencedin1979afterisolationfrommyelinmembranes.Sincethattime,knockoutmicedeficientinMBPhavebeendevelopedwhichshoweddecreasedamountsofCNSmyelinationandaprogressivedisordercharacterizedbytremors,seizures,andearlydeath.ThegeneforMBPisonchromosome18;theproteinlocalizestotheCNSandtovariouscellsofthehematopoieticsystem.ThepoolofMBPinthecentralnervoussystemisverydiverse.NotonlyisMBPpresentinanumberofsplicevarients,buttheproteinalsoundergoesavarietyofpost-translationalmodifications,andexistsintheCNSinanumberofforms(i.e.phosphorylated,methylated,deamidatedandcitrullinated).
